You can have many copies of your cherished files. Things like wedding photos, key memories, good safe keeping things… I decided this end of summer I was going to put in place strategy.
I did a couple of sensible things. I re organized my files, backups and data strategy into a 3-2-1 backup strategy as best I could. So far, so good.
Breathing old life into old machines
My Macbook Pro 10,1 from approx 2012… now is running MX Linux! Distraction free writing machine and more. I still need to replace the battery… which may cost up to 150-200 apparently… but its worth it in my view.
It runs MX Linux, the distro, with XFCE, the version of desktop manager it uses now. And it works great! I didnt have to special install anything yet so far after installation. The only issue that is minor is the screen scaling on a retina laptop… it looks a hair clunky.
Next Ill use it for web development…
Entombing encrypted time machine backups
An external hard drive was completely full, it was starting to slow down on making new copies, why not bury it for my future self I wondered and switch to a new HDD?
I checked they were encrypted, left myself a physical note with it, and put it in a box deep in my stuff. To be opened upon moving house I wonder…
Off of Google Photos… mostly… for now…
Im not the hugest fan of it but Im trying out Proton photos, with a plan to eventually move to Immich and self host some day in the future. My phone a Google Pixel makes it hard to get off Google Photos in general, but you can disable it and make it stop backing up for now.
My intention is to stop using it for a few months comfortable before trying to retire my google account or something bigger.
Letting go of a domain or two
I wont name them… but some domains I set free back into the ether!
